We follow a systematic approach to teaching phonics which we have broken down into ‘Steps’. Children are taught the sound each individual letter makes and what it looks like. We then move on to combinations of letters that make one sound. Children practice applying these skills to help them to read and write.
‘Tricky Trevor’ helps our children to learn how to read and spell ‘tricky’ words and our children are determined not to let him beat them!
Children have weekly Guided Reading lessons where they read in a small group with their teacher or Teaching Assistant. Children may also be involved in a programme called ‘Accelerated Reading’ which involves reading books and using the I Pads to answer comprehension questions about them. Our children are very enthusiastic about this!
